Is Oil Good For Your Face?

26 September 2023

Today, our goal is to provide insights into the topic of facial oils, and debunk a myth or two along the way. Hopefully giving you a renewed faith in exploring some new skincare products.

Using Face Oil Clogs your Pores and Makes Your Skin Oily

False, if you've ever been concerned that using face oils might lead to clogged skin pores and breakouts, you're certainly not alone in this belief. It's a common misconception. Despite its name, "face oil" doesn't alter your skin's natural characteristics. In other words, while the product does provide hydration to your skin, it won't increase its natural oiliness.

In fact, excessive oil production may actually be due to your skin missing oil. When your skin is adequately hydrated, it doesn't have to produce as much natural oil. Surprisingly, you can incorporate facial oil into your skincare routine, regardless of your skin type!

All Oils Are The Same

False, oils differ significantly, while it's true that some oils have the potential to clog pores, it's important to recognize that not all oils share the same properties and effects. Non-comedogenic oils or products, on the other hand, do not block your pores. Typically, non-comedogenic oils are rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, which not only maintain skin hydration but also enhance skin texture.

Take hemp seed oil, for instance; it serves as an excellent option for skincare ingredients. It boasts a comedogenic rating of 0, ensuring that it will not clog pores. Skincare ingredients are typically assessed for their pore-clogging potential using a Comedogenic Scale, which ranges from 0 to 5.

An ingredient with a rating of 0 signifies that it won't clog pores at all, while 5 signifies an ingredient that is highly pore-clogging. To be considered a non-comedogenic oil, it must be rated at 2 or less.

Hemp seed oil earns a perfect score of 0 on the Comedogenic Scale, signifying its entirely non-comedogenic in nature. It is a safe choice for all skin types, even for individuals dealing with acne blemishes and excessive oiliness, as it won't block pores. Furthermore, hemp seed oil boasts a rich content of antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, E, F, and essential fatty acids like omega-3, 6, and 9. These components work together to fortify the skin's outer layer, enhancing its ability to retain moisture.

In contrast, wheat germ oil serves as an example of a level 5 on the scale. For those with a tendency to experience breakouts, it's advisable to steer clear of skincare products containing wheat germ oil for application on the face, neck, or chest areas, as it has a high likelihood of exacerbating future breakouts and acne flare-ups.

Don’t Fall Victim to False Skincare Claims

Just as face oil won’t make your skin oilier, unfortunately it also won’t make you look younger. Truthfully, cosmetic products can’t undo the effects of aging, but they can slow the process and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This again ties back to keeping your skin hydrated. When your skin remains nourished, it often appears to have a youthful glow.

Simply, we need to take care of our skin, if we desire to keep it looking and feeling youthful for longer. By prioritizing skincare today, you can enjoy the rewards of youthful, healthy skin in the future.  As the saying goes "prevention is better than cure"

Exercising prudence is a wise approach.

Incorporating oil into your skincare routine can bring about numerous benefits for your skin health. However, as with any topical application, there is always the possibility of experiencing an allergic reaction. It is wise to conduct a sensitivity or allergic reaction patch test, before applying new products to your face and body.

Apply the product onto a small section of the skin that is less prone to be accidentally washed or rubbed away. Suitable areas for this test may include the inner arm or the bend of the elbow. Wait for 24 hours and see if any allergic reaction is there. If not, you can use that product liberally.

When dealing with a persistent skin condition, it's highly advisable to seek guidance from a dermatologist or another skincare professional. Their expertise can help you make a well-informed decision regarding which products are best suited to address your specific skin condition.
